Eco-School Programme
Our school has registered as part of the Eco-School programme. This means that we have made a commitment as a school to continously improve our environmental attitude by working towards deeper, better, more meaningful environmental learning and responsible environmental management that will result in whole-school development and will bring about positive environmental change.
What is the Eco Schools programme about?
The Eco Schools programme was introduced into the South African schools’ context in 1995 as a environmental enrichment programme, aimed at achieving better environmental management.
The programme is supported and encouraged by the Department of Education because it is whole-heartedly based in the curriculum content and is driven by the Learning Outcomes.
- The programme has been designed to encourage learning and action for a healthy environment throughout the whole school, in all the phases and across all the learning areas.
- The school undertakes a practical project to improve some aspect of environmental management at their school.
- The practical project serves as a vehicle through which Learning Outcomes and Assessment standards are fulfilled, and at the same time environmental learning is strengthened.
- Each year, schools aim to improve on the previous year’s efforts thereby qualifying for an internationally recognised symbol of excellence after 5 years of involvement.
What is the purpose of the Eco-School programme?
To promote Environmental Education and learning, that is Curriculum linked and relevant, and that assists teachers to achieve Learning Outcomes. The programme aims to Stimulate environmental sensitivity and awareness, and encourage responsible environmental Choices and attitudes. Its purpose is to Help schools to fulfil the mandate of incorporating environmental learning into all learning areas, across all grades. Its purpose is to help schools to Organise their environmental activities meaningfully, rather than only engaging in ad hoc projects. The programme presents Opportunities for whole-school improvement, and encourages Learner involvement through participating and initiating action projects that encourage experiential learning and self-discovery.
